Many cats love being on their human, but not all of them like being picked up or put in new places. If you want your cat to get used to riding in your hoodie pocket (or just spending more time in your lap), the key is patience and letting them decide.
1. Start sitting down, somewhere quiet
Pick a moment when your cat is relaxed, like after a meal or when they're looking for a nap. Sit on the couch or your desk chair, with no noise or rush. Don't try it standing or walking the first few times.
2. Make it smell like you
Leave the garment in their sleeping area for a few hours, or put a worn T-shirt of yours inside. A familiar smell helps them see it as a safe spot.
3. Let them go in on their own
Instead of putting them in, open the pocket and let them explore. If they go in, reward them with gentle pets or a treat. If they hop right out, no problem — try again another day.
4. Short sessions at first
A few minutes is enough at first. Make it longer as they get comfortable. Most cats get used to it within a few days if the experience is always pleasant.
5. Respect the "no" signals
Ears back, a thumping tail, trying to get out or hissing mean "not today." Forcing it will only make them associate the garment with something bad.
Safety first
- Use it at home: a hoodie pocket is not a carrier for going outside.
- Avoid sudden movements and don't cook or handle anything hot with your cat inside.
- Designed for cats and small dogs: as a guide, up to about 9-11 lbs.
Our Kangapaw hoodie is made for exactly this: soft sherpa, a roomy pocket and a round window so they can peek out without feeling trapped.
